The Importance of Fire Resistance of School Bus Interiors

Few accidents could be as horrifying as a fire inside a crowded school bus - which is why modern buses have numerous features to prevent fires from spreading. Anyone involved in school transportation should be aware of your buses' fire systems, and ensure they're in good repair, to maintain student safety every time they're on the road.
How School Buses Stop Fire Outbreaks
1 - Engine compartment fire walls
Typically, every bus includes an air gap between the engine compartment and the driver, which makes it more difficult for an engine fire to jump into the main compartment. This is typically combined with a steel firewall directly in front of the driver, which will also help contain the fire.
The firewall should be periodically inspected to ensure it's still in good shape. This is particularly important if the bus is ever involved in any kind of accident that might have compromised its internal structure.
2 - Fireproof interiors
Everything in the passenger section of the bus, such as the floors and seat covers, are going to be built of fire-resistant materials that require extremely high heat to ignite. If a fire does manage to start in the bus, it should be slow to spread because of that.
However, damage to the seats or other materials can reduce their fireproofing, so patch or replace damaged items quickly.
3 - Fire suppression systems
At a bare minimum, every bus should have a manual fire extinguisher onboard, just in case. However, it's better if you have an actual fire suppression system installed on the bus that will activate even if no one can get to the fire extinguisher.
4 - Electric bus issues
E-buses have unique problems, because the battery on the bottom of the bus can be susceptible to fire. E-buses on the market have advanced failsafe systems constantly monitoring the battery, and can shut down power if the battery becomes dangerously hot. These should be periodically tested, per the manufacturer's instructions.
In addition, many include other fire suppression systems, such as compressed aerosol sprayers, installed near the battery.
