Installing cameras on your school buses brings a lot of benefits. You'll instantly improve both safety and security on your buses, as well as having verifiable evidence whenever there's a dispute about events on the bus. Cameras aren't even that expensive these days.
However, it's crucial to plan ahead before installing the cameras. There are a few key mistakes we see districts make, that end up adding time or money costs to the project. Avoid them, and things should go smoothly.
Four Must-Dos When Installing Bus Cameras
1 - Check your local laws!
Every state, and sometimes individual cities, have different regulations on where and how cameras can be installed on vehicles. For example, some areas require cameras to be recessed, while others don't. So be sure to have your district lawyers look into local regulations, to ensure the installation is fully street-legal. Otherwise, you could lose a lot of time and money redoing the install.
2 - Have a full upgrade schedule worked out
Assume that every bus getting cameras is going to be out of commission for a day while they're installed. So you need to make sure that A) those buses won't be needed for other things, and B) they're available at the time and place the installer expects.
In general, it's best to do these sorts of upgrades during a lull, like spring break or summer vacation.
3 - Do a trial run with a single bus first
Before committing to a full set of installations, have the installers do one bus first - maybe a week before the rest. This gives you time to test out the equipment and ensure everything was installed properly. If it all looks good, then it's safe to order the full upgrade schedule. Otherwise, you have an opportunity to refine the process before proceeding.
4 - Be on-site during the installation
Don't treat these upgrades as fire-and-forget. A school representative should be on-site and overseeing the installations as they happen. Don't interfere unnecessarily; just be there in case there are any questions or issues that require a school representative.
