It's hard to overstate how much harm is being done by the ongoing shortage of school bus drivers.
Economists agree that the situation remains "severe," with an astounding 90%+ of respondents to a 2024 survey reporting a lack of drivers. The shortage has become nearly ubiquitous, with only the most well-funded of districts still managing to maintain enough staff.
This isn't just a challenge to school staffing: the lack of drivers is causing significant harm through both direct and indirect effects. Something needs to change, because the situation is becoming unsustainable.
How The Bus Driver Shortage Harms Schools and Communities
These are just some of the problems we're seeing:
- Schools cannot fulfill basic obligations. Legally, schools are required to provide busing within their districts. Failure to do so could even threaten their state or Federal funding, creating an even bigger budget crisis.
- At-risk students hit hardest. The most in-need of children are among the first to be harmed by a lack of drivers, especially those whose parents cannot afford alternative transportation. Homeless students will also be hit hard.
- Delays and cancelations. We're seeing more and more examples of schools being forced to delay classes, or even cancel classes outright, due to a lack of transportation.
- Parental uncertainty. Parents are also typically struggling to make ends meet, and now they may not be able to rely on school buses. This could easily cause employment issues, if they're late to work while transporting their children.
- Safety issues. Student safety should be paramount, but some districts are having to over-crowd their buses just to get all the students delivered. That could be a disaster if an accident occurs.
- Traffic jams. If too many parents are forced to transport their own students, it can create massive traffic snarls centered around the school.
- Knock-on effects. If a large number of workers are late to work, and large traffic jams can affect areas a mile-wide or bigger, this starts creating major knock-on effects to the entire local economy.
- Increased pollution. A fleet of cars will produce far more pollutants than a few buses. Shutting down bus routes hurts the local environment.
In short, the school bus driver shortage is causing severe, wide-ranging problems. Hiring drivers, and allocating enough resources to pay them well, should be a priority for districts - even if it means painful cuts in other areas.
