Despite being a known problem for years, the school bus driver shortage remains "severe" with no real signs of reversing. This is causing problems across the industry, and schools largely have to rely on themselves to keep their buses rolling.
Finding good drivers and keeping them happy should be a priority for every public school right now.
Finding and Keeping Great Bus Drivers
1 - Offer better pay
We know it's trite, but the reality is that school bus drivers are severely underpaid - especially compared to other jobs available to people with Commercial Drivers' Licenses (CDLs), such as commercial shipping. If there's anything your district can do to make more money available for driver pay or benefits, it will improve your recruitment efforts.
2 - Offer licensing training
Another option is to recruit from the general public, and help them obtain their CDLs in the process. Again, this takes money, but at least the new drivers will likely feel some sense of gratitude/obligation if you pay for their training and licensing. You may even be able to lock them into longer contracts with licensing as a bonus.
3 - Provide plenty of positive feedback
Frankly, your bus drivers should feel downright pampered. Don't skimp on bonuses, free meals, parties, and other activities intended to make the drivers feel welcome and appreciated. Be sure they're always invited to any district-wide events as well, and praise them in public when possible.
4 - Use the carrot, not the stick
Drivers, of course, must still be monitored and encouraged to drive well. However, now is not the time for harsh punitive measures. Use positive bonuses to encourage outstanding performance, such as prizes or recognition for 'least route delays' or 'best fuel efficiency.'
5 - Have your drivers' backs
Aside from compensation, one of the biggest factors affecting drivers' morale is their interactions with parents and students. If a bus driver is in a conflict with an angry parent, for example, make sure the driver knows you'll protect them unless they truly messed up.
Few things will wreck driver morale faster than placating parents at their expense.
