Fleet Optimization was created to be used as a tool to analyze your student stops currently being used for increasing the efficiency of the transportation for those students.
How Do I Use Fleet Optimizer
Fleet Optimization will generate optimal routes for individual or combined schools using selected criteria. The routes created do not affect the current routing used throughout the district. These routes can then be analyzed using complete bus schedules, passenger lists, route costs and driving instructions. Individual routes can then be made active to be incorporated and used immediately. Criteria settings available are:
Purpose of Route (Pickup, Dropoff or Noon Kindergarten)
Students assigned to specific school(s)
Number of buses
Minimum and Maximum ride times
Bus Load Options
Optimized route paths are created utilizing road hazards, roadblocks and one-way roads. Ideally, reducing the number of buses, drivers and turn-arounds required where inefficiencies exist.
Found on the MAINTAIN MENU, this screen allows you to create routes for students already assigned to stops.
Maintain Menu Screen
Click [Fleet Optimization] [Add] and the following screen displays.
Fleet Optimization Configuration Screen
NOTE: Depots, schools and stops that are not located will not be included.
The Route Set Description defaults to the current date and time, this can be modified to a more descriptive name if desired.
Select the purpose to create the routes for. Students assigned to stops for the selected purpose will be used for optimization.
This is also where the ride times for the students are entered. The Max Ride Time is the total amount of time that any student could be expected to be on the bus. The Max Travel Time is the total amount of time that the BUS is expected to be in use.
These time constraints will be used in the final process to calculate every possible set. If the process could not compute using the specified constraints, enter a higher maximum time.
NOTE: If Fleet Optimization cannot route all students using the supplied parameters (number of buses, time, etc) then additional routes will be created using the first bus in the list to accommodate all students. The user must then edit the routes to use additional buses, extend the ride time, etc.
Fleet Optimization Add Students Screen
Click on Add Students to generate a list of students to use during the Fleet Optimization process.
Select the Type of routes to be generated:
- By School will list all of the schools with students currently assigned to them.
- By Route will list all of the current routes.
- By Zone will list all of the current zones manually created already.
Fleet Optimization Select Schools Screen
Select the school(s) to be used for creating the combined routes. Students assigned to stops for the selected schools will be used for optimization. Routes generated will look at the Routing Options selected below.
Fleet Optimization Select Route Screen
Select those routes from the list that are to be optimized. The students assigned to all of the selected routes will be included in the Fleet Optimization. New routes will be created just for the students selected without deleting the old routes.
NOTE: If you select this option, but then select "un-routed" only from the Routed/Un-routed options, Zero (0) students will be selected.
Fleet Optimization Select Zone Screen
Select those zones from the list that are to have routes generated. Only those stops assigned to students which are within the zone will be included in the Fleet Optimization route(s).
Fleet Optimization Grades Selection Screen
Select the grade(s) to be used for selecting the students to be used when creating the combined routes. This list is dynamically created according to the grades currently assigned to students for the selected schools.
Fleet Optimization Routed/Unrouted Selection Screen
Select the routing status to be used for selecting the students to be routed.
Fleet Optimization Summary Screen
The total number of students selected is displayed. Click Finish to continue.
Fleet Optimization Select Students Screen
The students are now listed according to the selections made. Scroll to the right and additional information is listed for each student. Students using specific Wheelchair types are listed in the last column. Uncheck those students that are not to be included.
Fleet Optimization Select Students Screen
Click on the Clear All Students to start over.
If the school count is greater than one (1), then there are three additional options:
- Group Students By School - This option will group students together by school and route them accordingly. Each route will service only one school at a time.
- Route Schools Together - This option will group students together regardless of school attended. Each route can service more than one school at a time. This option disregards transfers.
- Transfer Location - This option will group students together regardless of school attended. Each route can service more than one school at a time. This option will make use of the transfer point chosen in the dropdown menu.
Fleet Optimization Bus Selection Screen
In this screen, you can select between two options for buses:
- Use Specified Bus Size - Uses the entered Bus Capacity.
- Use Buses Selected Below - Allows you to select from a list of buses that exist in BusBoss™
When using Use Buses Selected Below, select the Bus Capacity, choose whether or not to allow turn-arounds, and choose a route start location. Every bus will use the same start location in this method. Once choices are made, move onto the next tab.
When using Use Buses Selected Below, the following applies:
Select the vehicles needed to accommodate the students selected. The number of buses and total capacity should be enough to transport the number of students. The numbers at the bottom will display the Seat and Wheel Chair capacity differences. Wheel Chair needs are taken from the Student Transportation Tab . Click on the Start Location dropdown to select a starting point for each vehicle. The default Start Locations are taken from the Bus General Tab. The routes will be created using these points as the beginning of the route assigned to the selected bus.
NOTE: The number of students referred to at the bottom of this window is actually the number of seats needed. If the number of seats per student is defined as "3" in the [Maintain][School][General]"Default Students per Seat" field, then this value will appear three times larger than the actual number of students. If the "Default Number of Seats" is set to "1", then the number of seats with equal the number of students.
If not enough buses are selected to accommodate the selected number of students, an error message will be displayed and you will not be allowed to continue!

Fleet Optimization Routes Generated Screen
Click on the Optimize Routes button to generate the routes. You will see the Fleet Optimization tool at work on the map.
Routes are listed in the order created. To display the route, click on the Visible box to the right of the color selection box. Routes can be displayed in any color selected using the "..." button. In addition to the color, the number of students, the number of stops, the mileage and time for each route is displayed.
Display a route by clicking on the check box next to the route description. The route will be displayed on the map.
Highlight a route in the list. This will switch the route displayed on the map from one route to the other. The map will display the route stops and paths with the stop numbers next to each stop. These numbers apply to the sequence of the stops on the route. See Stops List Screen.
Fleet Optimization Stops
After selecting a route in the Routes List, click on Stops. This screen will display all of the stops applicable to the selected route. It also displays the student counts, stop times and accumulated miles to each stop. Start Times are calculated using the School's Ideal Arrival Time. Changes can be made once a route is made active.
NOTE: Every route created gets a unique route description using the Bus Number assigned to it. These descriptions can be modified by the user, but only after the route(s) has been activated.
