Once you have logged in, you will see the start-up screen, pictured below. We will go over each menu bar in detail. At the beginning of this guide are easy to follow procedures to help you get even more familiar with the awesome capabilities of this program.
When you start up BusBoss your map is displayed and the scenario you have logged into is highlighted at the top of the window.
Each scenario has a pre-selected color for the background. You have the option in the Configuration menu to change the background color for each scenario. These background colors are scenario-specific. Anyone logged into BusBoss from any computer will see the same background. If more than one person is accessing the same database and one person changes the background, the background will not be updated on the other computer until they logoff and log back in. More information on changing the background is discussed in the Configuration Screen.
NOTE: The scenario name window area is also used as a progress bar.
How do alerts work and how can I customize them?
If you have chosen to display alerts on startup from the Configuration - Alerts Tab, the Alerts screen is displayed every time you log in to BusBoss. The alerts are displayed according to categories set up in the Configuration - Alerts Tab and broken out into sections relating to different types of information stored in BusBoss. Only items that have problems or inconsistencies will be displayed in the sections. Sections that have been selected in the <User Defined Critical Configuration> list will be displayed in bold as being critical. Categories can be customized to suit the users needs. The custom categories and warnings are stored in the Configuration - Alerts Tab.
In order to get a list of the items with problems or inconsistencies in each section, click on the [+] symbol next to each category. Next to the item you would like to view, select the arrow icon to open the item itself, or open the relevant tool to fix that item. Click on the (?) symbol to visit the associated page on our helpsite.
Certain categories will also allow you to make changes directly from the Alerts screen.
All of the following sections can be enabled or disabled in the Configuration - Alerts Tab.
Click [Refresh] to get an updated list of alerts.
Click [Config.] to modify and/or customize the categories and alerts listed. This will automatically take you to the Configuration - Alerts Tab.
The ribbon bar is located on the top of the main screen above the map. The ribbon bar provides shortcuts to commonly used functions in BusBoss™.
There are dropdown lists along the top of the Map that are divided into topics. The dropdowns available are: Streets, Routes, Stops, Students, Addresses, Schools, Depots, Transfers, Threat Zones, Landmarks, and area of the Map in miles is displayed. Map miles displayed can be selected from the dropdown or by typing a number in the box. The Main Screen also has a scale at the top of the screen that displays the map height and map width of the map area being displayed on the screen. You can quickly zoom the map to a specific area in miles by selecting a number or typing in the number of miles in the zoom scale dropdown found at top of the map. You can also click and drag the mouse to use a rubber band to select and zoom in to a specific area of the map. To display the dropdown list, click on the arrow to the right of each dropdown. Then select what you need from the dropdown list.
When you hover over the map with your mouse pointer, information about the map area will be displayed automatically below the map in the status bar. For example, if you are over a house, the address of the house will be displayed. If you hover over a road, the name of the road will be displayed in the status bar. If multiple items are displayed in the same location, the information for all of the items are displayed.
You can move around the map by zooming in, zooming out, and panning the map across the screen. Clicking and dragging the mouse around a specific area will also zoom into the selected area. All map symbols will automatically resize according to the map zoom level.
You can also right click the mouse button anywhere on the map to get additional options.
Map Right Click Menu
Can I change my right click function?
When using the right click, most of the items in the list will look at the position of the pointer on the map and do what was selected. For example, right click on the map on a specific intersection then click Add Stop. This will automatically put a stop on that intersection and bring up the Stop Description screen. This eliminates the need to click on the Stops Dropdown Menu, then click on the location on the map. (Two less clicks).
NOTE: The right clicking on the map can be changed using the Enable/Disable Right Click Menu icon. Right clicking will automatically recenter the map at the location of your mouse when the mouse pointer is anything but Normal. This is helpful when you need to move the map during routing.
Maps come with the names of the streets and house number ranges along the streets preloaded. If this information is not accurate, you can manually change the map.
Map maintenance is used for modifying the map information (including anything related to the map) like routing, and redistricting. You can add stops, houses, schools, depots, roads, transfers, landmarks, designate hazardous roads, set speed limits, set road blocks, set one-ways, locate addresses, edit road information (house number ranges, street names), create routes, modify routes, create zones, etc.
The Main Screen also has a scale at the top of the screen that displays the map width and map height of the map being displayed on the screen. You can quickly zoom the map to a specific width in miles by selecting a number or typing in the number of miles in the zoom scale dropdown found at top of the map.
